New Colors of Acadia!

Thursday, March 28th, 2013

We’re pleased to announce two fabulous new colors of Acadia for later spring+ early summer knitting!

Egret is a gorgeous cream color. The blend of natural colored alpaca with shiny silk and soft natural merino to creates a subtle and sophisticated shade that looks amazing with just about anything.

Sand is a mid-tone neutral, paler and warmer than our beloved driftwood, but just as wonderful.

Wintry Mix Chex!

Thursday, December 27th, 2012

Courtney loves to cook, and this extends into kitschy cereal culinary arts.  Never one to truly follow a recipe, and continually adjusting and making things up as she goes, the medium of Chex offers a the opportunity for variety and as many manifestations as she can muster. Each holiday season she mixes up a batch – or six – and this year’s offering is “Wintry Mix Chex Mix.”  A little sweet, a little spicy, a little salty – what more could you ask for?

ingredients1

What you need:
Baking sheet
Measuring spoons
Measuring cups
Paper towels or parchment paper

Ingredients:
3 cups corn Chex
3 cups chocolate Chex
2 cups cinnamon Chex
1/2 cup pistachios
1/3 cup cashews
1/3 cup peanuts
(Courtney used Planters Pistachio Grove Blend with sea salt)
1/2 c. cinnamon dusted almonds
1/2 c. cocoa dusted almonds
1/4 cup brown sugar
6 tablespoons butter
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup dark or semi-sweet chocolate chunks
1 cup dried cherries

cook1

Vintage-vibe assisted by the very 1970s kitchen at KW headquarters. Who’s to complain about a silly khaki oven when it means we get chex mix at work?

Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl add cereals and all the nuts except the cocoa dusted ones. Mix well. In a small saucepan melt butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and cayenne pepper together.
Pour the melted butter mixture over the cereal and nuts and mix well (and gently!) until it’s well coated. Spread on a baking sheet and bake for one hour, stirring gently every 15 mins.

art

Spread mixture evenly on paper towels or parchment paper to cool thoroughly. Once it’s cool move the mix to a large bowl and add cherries, chocolate and chocolate dusted almonds.

Then bask in the glory of your delicious concoction.
Happy Holidays from Kelbourne Woolens and The Fibre Company!

Susan

Friday, December 21st, 2012

We hope you enjoy this post by Meghan, one of our fabulous employees here at KW headquarters:

Several years ago I moved to Chicago. I was young and scared and excited and penniless. I papered that city with my resume. One of the places that I asked for a job at was a great neighborhood bar called Goldstar Bar in a burgeoning neighborhood full of artists and students. The neighborhood has since transitioned to one of a more affluent nature but back then it was still a bit rough. Although Goldstar didn’t hire me, I found a place of comfort within its walls. I met many friends there, played free pool and admired (or at least observed) the always changing artworks the owners curated from their patrons. It was at Goldstar that my partner confessed his love for me. Among the many lovely friends that were made there, one stands out in particular. She was a co-owner with her mother and husband. Her name was Susan and it’s to her memory that I dedicate this post.

Susan was one of the nicest people I have ever met. She was constantly rescuing cats, both finding homes for the tame ones and fixing and letting free the feral ones. She was an old school punk and had seen some amazing bands and had great stories. She loved spooky cemetaries and ghost stories but was far from spooky herself. Halloween was her favorite holiday and she always threw an amazing Halloween party at her house. Combining her two loves, she also held a yearly Halloween themed fundraiser specifically dedicated to raising money for the black dogs and cats at the shelter, as they are the ones to tend to get adopted last. All the Goldstar regulars ended up being her good friends. Susan was a friendship magnet; everyone was drawn to her.

susan2

My partner and I left Chicago for Philadelphia a year ago. Within 6 months, we heard the devastating news that Susan was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. Throughout the next several months Susan and her family battled cancer. She had a great network of friends and family to support her in her treatment. Her community rallied around her to put on fundraisers to raise money for treatment.

I wanted to do something a little more personal than donate money over Paypal (though I happily did that too). Thinking of Susan’s love of Halloween, I was drawn to the Stratum hat by Melissa LaBarre because of it’s resemblance to a spider web. I had found some really cute pins with creepy spiders depicted on them that I could affix to the hat when I it was knit.

I chose to knit with Road To China Worsted because it is positively the softest yarn I have ever felt and I thought it would be appropriate for someone dealing with Chemo treatments. I didn’t feel it was enough though. (It’s never enough when you want to comfort someone dealing with something you can’t even begin to imagine.) So I made a pillow, using a sexy, retro witch iron-on, some vintage-looking yellow printed cotton and bit of black polka-dotted piping. We included a zombie themed card that my partner made on Photoshop and lot’s of positive thoughts and love.

susan4

Susan lost her battle with cancer on December 10 in the comfort of her own home surrounded with her closest circle of loved ones.

In honor of all those who have been affected by Pancreatic Cancer, we here at Kelbourne Woolens wanted to do something to give back. For the next 30 days, a portion of the proceeds from the sales of the patterns below will go towards pancreatic cancer research. I have chosen these patterns because they can all be knit in either Road to China Worsted or Road to China Light and the items made from these yarns will be the softest things you could make for someone you want to give comfort to.

Annie and the Swiss Cheese Scarf

Tuesday, December 11th, 2012

Alana Dakos of Never Not Knitting {and Coastal Knits} recently published a children’s book, Annie and the Swiss Cheese Scarf.

finished_cover

Annie and the Swiss Cheese Scarf is an adorable book that details the story of Annie, a young girl who, after seeing her mom knit, wants to learn herself. Of course, like everything, Annie needs to be patient in order to learn, but in time (and with the help of a very catchy rhyme!) Annie masters the art of knitting. Beautifully illustrated by Neesha Hudson, the book is, in a word, fabulous.

Alana and Neesha didn’t stop at a beautiful book, though. Available as a hard cover copy, or, in a deluxe gift set (including a puzzle, stickers and a paperdoll set! – pictured below), either would make a wonderful gift for any young person in your life.

Although Charlie is still in her “hold two knitting needles and flail them around like an 80s drummer” phase, we didn’t think it was too soon to introduce her to Annie and the joys of knitting.

We think it is safe to say it was a hit!

Add a little knitting to your holiday decor this year with our Kelbourne Woolens Holiday Paper Chain!

img_4719

During the holidays Courtney’s family makes paper chains and strings them throughout the house. This year, uninspired by the free downloadable templates she found online, she asked Kate to help her out by making a knitting related paper chain template.

img_4723

The end result is 3 designs in 2 colorways – a wide cable knit, vertical cable stripes and all-over snowflakes.

Courtney’s son Clyde got in on the action as well – he’s always game for anything involving scotch tape!

As a little extra bonus, leave us a comment on this post with your guess as to how many pine cones Maura used in our mantle decor and we’ll send you a copy of the Avery Cowl and two skeins of Acadia in the new color Pine Cone! {Prize will be awarded to the first correct guess. Only one guess per person, please!}

Kate’s favorite was the spotted character. He was the only one of his kind in the whole flock. It was so much fun to hang out with all of the alpacas – and we even got to “walk” them around the field!
