Featured Find: Harvest Textiles

Sunday, December 30th, 2012

Harvest Textiles was founded in 2010 by Jess Wright, Emma Byrnes, Laura Davies and Frances Wilson as an ode to screen printing.  From seminars and workshops featuring industry professionals to pop-up shops showcasing their amazing line of bright and cheerful products, Harvest Textiles makes sure dull and boring is the last words that come to mind when viewing their products, and we couldn’t agree more.

Harvest Textiles

With a broad spectrum of products, Harvest Textiles reveals that color and pattern should be embraced, and not feared.  From backpacks to DIY kits for the ever so curious sewer, Harvest Textiles puts a pop of color in all of their products; and as an added bonus, Harvest uses organic, recycled or locally produced materials as the base for their colorful line. An organic product that’s bright and cheerful? What more could my online shopping cart ask for!

If you’re in Australia, you’re in luck, because Harvest also offers countless workshops on screen printing for the textile-curious, making us in Philadelphia wish we could board a plane and sign up!  However, due to increased plane rates and prior engagements we’ll live vicariously through the gorgeous color combinations and charming products that Harvest Textiles continues to deliver.

Smitten Kitchen is a blog project founded by Deb Perelman, a woman of many trades such as “a record store shift supervisor, a scrawler of ‘happy birthday’ on bakery cakes, an art therapist and a technology reporter”.  So if you’re looking to create “stepped up comfort foods” that are quick, simple and elegant, she’s the woman to go to.

After looking, and drooling over recipes such as: pink lemonade bars, zucchini rice gratin or bacon corn hash; it’s difficult to not be inspired to jump in the kitchen and cook, but instead of feeling overwhelmed with lack of ingredients, time, or skill, we’re introduced to a new world of cooking with simple ingredients.

Check out more of what Deb, and her family of eaters, has to offer at Smitten Kitchen. Warning, you’ll leave hungry.

Featured Find: Clothbound Classics

Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012

Although they’ve been out for a little while, we just recently discovered The Penguin Classic SeriesClothbound Classics” when browsing the internet (searching for something entirely different, as these things tend to go) and happened upon this gorgeous cover of A Tale of Two Cities.

taleoftwocities2

The series is a collection of book covers designed by Coralie Bickford-Smith that feature new designs of some of the greatest novels of all time.

Each cover features a stamped design on linen cases in gorgeous color combinations. The designs themselves come from a theme or important piece of imagery in the book.

Another particular favorite of ours is The Odyssey. (Couldn’t you imagine is as a beautiful Fair Isle pattern?):

For more information about the collection, you can read an interview with Coralie posted on Design Sponge here. If you’re interested in purchasing the books in collections or as individual copies (or you’d like to see all of the covers) visit the Penguin website here.

{For those of you who were intrigued by the Mason Jar Cosy tutorial we published earlier in the month, there is a Crochet Lab taught by Vickie Howell that you may find interesting!}

In addition to Classes they offer, there are also cyber “craft-alongs”; Workshops from a slew of designers that give you the option of asking one-on-one questions from the designer/instructor.

Featured Find: The Cosby Sweater Project

Thursday, January 26th, 2012

We could spend hours – hours! – looking through the amazing-ness that is the Cosby Sweater Project, a website devoted to the iconic “Cosby Sweaters” from the mid-80′s – early 90′s television show.

cosby-sweater-project3

The author of the blog takes stills from episodes, draws print designs based off of the sweaters, and even adds an (often hilarious) synopsis of the episode.

The drawings alone are really inspiring as potential starting points for new design, and lend themselves to a multitude of possibilities when thinking about color, pattern and texture.
