New Canopy Worsted and New For Sale Pattern: Gertrude!

Friday, May 10th, 2013

Canopy Worsted has been a longtime favorite over here at Kelbourne Woolens. But, it had one little quirk in that it was available in 50 gram / 100 yard skeins, which wasn’t a lot of yarn per skein – particularly for a good basic worsted. We love using it for sweaters, and at 100 yards per skein we were tying on a new skein too frequently. Not being ones who relish the task of weaving in all those ends we decided to make a change: Canopy Worsted is now available in 100 gram / 200 yard skeins!

That means a woman’s medium sweater will use less than 10 skeins to complete, which is fantastic.

Canopy Worsted

We believe that Canopy Worsted is a fantastic luxury sweater yarn and in honor of it’s re-vamp, we’re pleased to release the last pattern in the Gallery CollectionGertrude:

Showcasing the dual-toned nature of Terra’s Butternut colorway, this shawl incorporates knit-in fringe to ease the amount of time on finishing this lovely accessory.  The shaping created by casting-on and binding off stitches is what gives this shawl an extra design element for it to stand above the rest.

Independent Designer Feature: Stria by Bristol Ivy

Tuesday, February 12th, 2013

Bristol Ivy is a knitwear designer that specializes in elegant designs with tasteful details. Bristol recently released her new book, Strata and Line, in collaboration with Leah B. Thibault, as a tribute to stripes within knitting patterns, and seeing as how we love stripes, it was a big hit in our office!  One of the patterns featured in the collection, Stria, features one of our most popular yarns, Acadia.

back

For this lovely, convertable cardigan, Bristol chose Acadia in Driftwood and Bog.  The contrast in color gives a bold striping detail on the back and sleeves of this garment, but the best part is that you can either wear it open, or button it to form a gorgeous cowl neck sweater.

bristol-convert

With Acadia’s subtle silk noils in mind, delicate pops of green and blue shine through in the Bog colorway, giving this sweater a great textural element without sacrificing the design.  We’ve already started playing around with different colorways for our very own Stria.

Knitscene Spring 2013: Seafoam Tam by Catherine Sheilds

Tuesday, January 8th, 2013

The preview of the Spring 2013 issue of Knitscene was recently published online. This issue showcases the play of stitch movement and color placement within a knitted garment and  highlights the designs of Catherine Shields, a great designer who was inspired by the changing state of nature for her exclusive collection.

seafoam-tam

The Seafoam Tam by Catherine Shields was inspired by the swirling nature of seafoam in the early hours of the morning and gives a refreshing take on the traditional tam. Knit out of Savannah in the color seafoam, a light blue-green with creme undertones, this tam features a subtle cable movement with a simple button detail.  The shaping is created using short-rows and then grafted together to create a seamless finish. The inherent texture from both the yarn and cable stitch pattern pay homage to Catherine’s nature-inspired tam, and is a great transitional piece into spring.

Pattern Specs:
• Size: 20 1/2″ brim circumference and 10 3/4″ diameter
• Yarn: Savannah: seafoam, 2 skeins
• Gauge: 22 sts and 28 rows = 4″ in mock cable and rib pattern on larger needle, after blocking
• Needles: US 3 (3.25 mm): 16″ circular (cir) needle, US 5 (3.75 mm): 16″ cir needle
• Markers (m)
• Waste Yarn
• One 5/8″ button
