New Canopy Worsted and New For Sale Pattern: Gertrude!

Friday, May 10th, 2013

Canopy Worsted has been a longtime favorite over here at Kelbourne Woolens. But, it had one little quirk in that it was available in 50 gram / 100 yard skeins, which wasn’t a lot of yarn per skein – particularly for a good basic worsted. We love using it for sweaters, and at 100 yards per skein we were tying on a new skein too frequently. Not being ones who relish the task of weaving in all those ends we decided to make a change: Canopy Worsted is now available in 100 gram / 200 yard skeins!

That means a woman’s medium sweater will use less than 10 skeins to complete, which is fantastic.

Canopy Worsted

We believe that Canopy Worsted is a fantastic luxury sweater yarn and in honor of it’s re-vamp, we’re pleased to release the last pattern in the Gallery CollectionGertrude:

Announcing…Kelbourne Woolens, Volume One

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

It’s been hard keeping this a secret all year, but we are so pleased to finally share with you our celebration of the first five years of Kelbourne Woolens!

coverblog1

Five years ago, in 2008, Kate was in her last year of graduate school, earning a degree in textile design with a weaving focus, and Courtney’s son was just six months old. Being in our late 20s and already pretty busy, owning our own business seemed impossible and wonderful, and at times like a terrifying dream come true.  But by August of 2008 Kelbourne Woolens was official, and jammed into a 500 square foot subleased office space, we took our first order.

Linden

Much has changed in the last five years—Courtney’s son is now an active and precocious five-year-old, and she and her family have moved from the city to a house on the river with a large organic garden. Kate finally finished her graduate degree, got married, and has a baby of her own. One thing, though, has stayed the same: our commitment to distributing beautiful yarns that are both wonderful to knit and wear, and creating knitting patterns that show off the best qualities of those yarns.

Springtime Bandit

The very first patterns we released were all free patterns—The Springtime Bandit, Selbu Modern, Give a Hoot Mittens among them. We just knit things we liked, photographed them on our friends with Courtney’s point-and-shoot camera.  We wrote the patterns, Kate laid them out and we posted them on our website and crossed our fingers that people would enjoy them as much as we did!  It’s hard to notice the progression from where you began to where you end up, so to honor the journey we have rewritten, rephotographed and re-edited eleven of our most popular designs and compiled them into a fantastic new book. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Hiker's Waistcoat

We are so happy to bring you this collection of our most popular patterns over the first five years. It would not exist without your support, and we count ourselves lucky to work amongst such talented and dedicated knitters. Thank you!

New Free Pattern: Alfalfa Baby Hat

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

When Charlie was a teeny tiny baby (in sharp contrast to her whopping 8 month old self!), Kate was able to keep hats on her with no trouble. Now that Charlie has developed a feisty little mind of her own, her hands constantly reach for whatever is on her head.

alfalfa_blog1

With that in mind, Kate incorporated everything she loves about baby hats – a “pixie” look, ties to hold it snug, a close fit, and integrated ear flaps to keep baby warm – into a new hat for Charlie to wear this fall and winter.

alfalfa_blog2

The end result is the Alfalfa baby hat, an adorable, form fitting and warm hat knit out of Terra that stays put on baby’s little head. Knit using just one skein, shown on Charlie in logwood purple, it is a great quick knit!

Handmade Love: Mason Jar Cosies

Friday, February 10th, 2012

We hope you enjoy this premiere guest post from friend of the Fibre Company + Kelbourne Woolens, Maura Kirk. Maura blogs about her many interests at The Projectory Handcrafts. You may also remember Maura from her contribution to our guest post on the Martha Stewart blog, and the accompanying cowl she designed out of Road to China Light.

cosies-full_web

A handmade gift is one of intention. It says to the recipient, you were on my mind when I chose this project, this yarn. When you hand someone a finished object, you’re handing over the tangible product of this thought and consideration.

I’ve never really thought much of Valentine’s Day. As a burgeoning teenage feminist, I bristled at this high holiday of happily-ever-after romantic fulfillment, and as an adult, I can’t figure out how you can reduce the complexity of love to a couple printed sentences on a greeting card or capture it underneath the cellophane enveloping a box of chocolates and a stuffed bear. In my own way, though, I have grown to appreciate a day set aside specifically for love, when so many other days just seem to slip by.

cosies-heart_web

Just as important as romantic love are the friends and community that comprise the fabric of our lives: the person who will watch your dog when you’re out of town, lend you a shoulder to cry on or be genuinely happy to share in your triumphs. Sometime love is the very visceral red and pink colors of passion and intensity, but for me, love is sometimes the sparrow grey of my living room walls where my friends gather for a weekly movie night, the aqua of my bike’s handle bar tape when I’ve gotten up extra early to share my morning coffee, or the blue glow of my cell phone when I’ve gotten late night text with a little piece of news that just couldn’t wait. Love is the people that we can count on, that are there for us without motive, who know they can count on us in return. In reclaiming Valentine’s Day, these are the people in my life I want to honor, to take the time to think of and make sure that I’m not taking all this love for granted.

cosies-stripes_web

These mason jar cozies are my solution to try and “reclaim” Valentine’s day in a small way. They are a perfect little handmade gift, as they use a small amount of yarn and take no time at all to make. The possibilities for their use are endless: use a large jar to hold a bouquet of flowers, to store a handful of vintage buttons or knitting needles, or fill them with loose-leaf tea, hot cocoa mix, or another delicious treat to be given as a gift. If you find your stash of mason jars to be lacking, they can be found just about anywhere in any size and your hardware store is a good place to start. If you’re looking to add even more color to your project, the bright blue ones are vintage and are easily found for cheap at most antique stores.

cosies-oahu_web

The tutorial below is adaptable to any sized jar, so use it as a jumping off point for creating a beautiful last minute gift for someone you love.
