New Colors of Road to China!

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013

Last week we announced the introduction of two new beautiful neutral colors of Acadia, and this week we’re delighted to announce the release of two lovely colors of Road to China. You may recognize both both colors from when we introduced them in the Road to China Light line. We loved them so much, we couldn’t help introduce them in the worsted as well!

roadtochina_rhodolite

Rhodolite is a gorgeous, saturated, deep magenta pink….

roadtochina_cobalt

…and cobalt is an intense rich navy blue.

Both colors are in stock and read to ship. Happy Knitting!

New Free Pattern: Picket Hat

Monday, February 18th, 2013

Originally knit way back in 2011, Maura kept wearing this hat to work all fall + winter and after we all threatened to steal it from her (more than once!) we though it was high time to write it up into a pattern.

picketblog5

The beauty of this hat is in its simplicity – a gorgeous yarn {Road to China in citrine) is worked in a 6 x 6 rib.

picketblog3

Instead of decreases, there is pleating at the top, creating a hat with perfect slouch and texture.

picketblog1

• Yarn: The Fibre Company Road to China Worsted (65% baby alpaca, 15% silk + 10% camel + 10% cashmere. 69yards/50gm skein): citrine, 2 skeins.
• Gauge: 16 sts and 25 rnds = 4“ in Ribbing after blocking.
• Needles: 2 – 16” US 8 (4 mm) circular needles and 1 dpn.
• Size: 18” circumference, unstretched, 8” height.
• Notions: Darning needle, 1 stitch marker.

Announcing…Kelbourne Woolens, Volume One

Thursday, January 24th, 2013

It’s been hard keeping this a secret all year, but we are so pleased to finally share with you our celebration of the first five years of Kelbourne Woolens!

coverblog1

Five years ago, in 2008, Kate was in her last year of graduate school, earning a degree in textile design with a weaving focus, and Courtney’s son was just six months old. Being in our late 20s and already pretty busy, owning our own business seemed impossible and wonderful, and at times like a terrifying dream come true.  But by August of 2008 Kelbourne Woolens was official, and jammed into a 500 square foot subleased office space, we took our first order.

Linden

Much has changed in the last five years—Courtney’s son is now an active and precocious five-year-old, and she and her family have moved from the city to a house on the river with a large organic garden. Kate finally finished her graduate degree, got married, and has a baby of her own. One thing, though, has stayed the same: our commitment to distributing beautiful yarns that are both wonderful to knit and wear, and creating knitting patterns that show off the best qualities of those yarns.

Springtime Bandit

The very first patterns we released were all free patterns—The Springtime Bandit, Selbu Modern, Give a Hoot Mittens among them. We just knit things we liked, photographed them on our friends with Courtney’s point-and-shoot camera.  We wrote the patterns, Kate laid them out and we posted them on our website and crossed our fingers that people would enjoy them as much as we did!  It’s hard to notice the progression from where you began to where you end up, so to honor the journey we have rewritten, rephotographed and re-edited eleven of our most popular designs and compiled them into a fantastic new book. We hope you enjoy them as much as we do.

Hiker's Waistcoat

We are so happy to bring you this collection of our most popular patterns over the first five years. It would not exist without your support, and we count ourselves lucky to work amongst such talented and dedicated knitters. Thank you!

Knitter Projects: Botanic Hat

Friday, January 11th, 2013

With winter showing its brutal face here on the east coast, it’s time to bring out the hats, scarves, mittens and everything warm to protect us from the harsh winter winds. The Botanic Hat by Stephen West is a great way to mix and match colors and textures of different yarns, plus it’s reversible! In this version, knit by one of our own, Meghan, she mixes Organik in oahu and Road to China Worsted in citrine, to give this hat a dosage of color for the dull and dreary winter season.

Awesome Job Meghan!

New Colors of Road to China!

Thursday, April 26th, 2012

Last but not least, our final batch of new colors for this season – three amazing additions to the Road to China line! You may recognize these three color from Road to China Light – we added them to that line this fall, and due to their popularity, we thought they deserved to be featured in Road to China as well.

roadtochina_moonstone
Moonstone

A smokey mid-tone brown with hints of plum and grey, Moonstone is a sophisticated neutral designed to go with anything.

roadtochina_abalone
Abalone

A showstopper of a color, Abalone starts with a base of dark green, and is layered with a deep brown and grey for a rich, saturated and complex duotone. We have this color in a few other iterations in some of the other lines, and despite the slight differences the twist, ply and fiber content produces in each yarn, every shade is always gorgeous.

roadtochina_apatite
Apatite

Not quite green, not quite blue, Apatite is a perfect saturated peacock with hints of light and dark tones.  It looks great with neutrals such as Smoky Quartz, Hematite + Grey Pearl, but also would make an amazing striped or color work project with Citrine or Peridot.

To check out the full palette of Road to China, visit the yarn page here.

All three new colors of Road to China are in stock and ready to ship and should be finding their way onto the shelves of your favorite LYS asap!

Independent Designer Feature: Zelkova

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012

Kristen Kapur of Through the Loops is at it again, this time with a beautiful sweater, the Zelkova cardigan {web link} {ravelry link}, knit out of Road to China in Malachite.

zelkova1

The body of the sweater is knit in one piece, and the 3/4 length sleeves are knit separately and joined at the armholes. The yoke is seamlessly shaped in one piece.

zelkova2

The decorative leaf lace panel works beautifully with the color of Road to China, and adds a lovely bit of visual interest without being overly fussy.
